JUNK A CAR WITH AN ETITLE

In Mississippi, if you have an electronic title, it either has an active lien or it had a lien that has been paid off.

Check with MDOT’S Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to see if your lien has been paid off. If it has, you can either transfer the title digitally to the buyer (if they accept digital transfers) or request a physical copy of a duplicate title using the form below.

You cannot junk a car with an active lien.

If you’re junking your car with Wheels Away, you must use a physical copy of the title.

SURRENDER OR TRANSFER YOUR LICENSE PLATE

When you junk your car in Mississippi, you must surrender your plate when you junk your car. You can’t transfer a plate from one vehicle to another unless it’s a specialty plate and the registered owner stays the same.

You can surrender your old plate to your local county tax collector.

Surrendering your plate will also end your current registration record.

To transfer a speciality plate, you need to transfer the specialty number, not the physical plate.

Take your old plate to your local county tax collector’s office, and request that the specialty tag be transferred to your driver’s record so you can attach it to a new vehicle.

You will also need to pay the standard registration fee of between $ 12.75 and $14.75 and a new special tag fee (varies by tag), as fees will not carry over from an old vehicle registration.

For more details on surrendering and transferring plates, get everything you need at a glance in our specialist guide to surrendering your license plate in Mississippi, which gives you all the forms, fees, processing times, and locations by county.

CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION

In Mississippi, there’s no official process to cancel your registration. When you surrender your plates, your current registration record will be ended.

If you’re transferring a speciality plate, you’ll need to apply for a new registration, as in Mississippi, tags are connected to both the vehicle and the owner.

JUNK AN ABANDONED CAR (PRIVATE PROPERTY)

If a vehicle has been left on your property without permission, contact local law enforcement. After 40 days, it may be classified as abandoned.

Law enforcement will notify the owner and lienholder, put a notice on the vehicle, and give time for the owner to respond.

After waiting the required timeframe (up to 30 days) for the vehicle to be claimed, and if the vehicle has market value, it can be sold at auction or disposed of by a licensed auto dealer.

JUNK AN ABANDONED CAR (PUBLIC PROPERTY)

If you’ve found an abandoned car on public property, like a highway, street, or public right-of-way, you must report it to local law enforcement on the non-emergency line.

If it’s on a highway, contact the Mississippi Highway Patrol on *47 with the closest mile marker, so it can be removed as soon as possible.

Once its been reported, law enforcement or state highways become responsible for the disposal of the vehicle. You can’t use a removal service like Wheels Away to tow it for you.

JUNK AN INHERITED VEHICLE

If you’ve inherited the car through survivorship rights, follow the steps below to junk it.

If you’ve got the car title and you’re listed as the surviving joint owner (your names are joined by ‘OR’ on the title, you can junk the car, but you must give the buyer additional paperwork to prove ownership.

  • Sign the back of the title as the surviving owner.
  • Give the new buyer a copy of the death certificate and, if requested, a valid ID to help verify your right to sell the vehicle.

JUNK A CAR WITH AN EXPIRED REGISTRATION

You can usually junk a vehicle with expired registration as long as you have the title to prove you own it. An expired registration simply means the vehicle can no longer be legally driven on public roads.

Lost your title? If your title is missing, damaged, or you never received it, use the form below to request a replacement.

JUNK A CAR WITH A LIEN

In Mississippi, vehicle titles with liens are stored and released electronically. Once the lien is cleared, you’ll need a copy showing the lien release to sell or junk your car.

Most buyers, including Wheels Away, can’t buy vehicles with active liens. To clear the lien, you’ll usually need to:

  • Pay off your remaining loan balance in full.
  • Get your lender’s approval to junk the car and use the proceeds to pay off the loan. This is less common and depends on your lender.

Most buyers, including Wheels Away, also require a physical copy of the title. In Mississippi, you can request a printed copy of your lien-released title for $9 using the form below.

NOT SURE IF THERE’S A LIEN? CHECK THE VIN.

If you’ve inherited a car or need to junk an abandoned vehicle, check whether there are any outstanding liens before junking.

To look for liens, run the vehicle’s VIN through an NMVTIS-approved provider or a vehicle history service like CARFAX.

Not sure where to find the VIN? Check these common locations. The exact spot may vary based on the vehicle’s age, make, and model.
