How to Junk Your Car With No Title in Louisiana

According to Louisiana law, you can’t junk cars without a title, with the exception of a few special circumstances.

- Auto Hulk Affidavit (Form DPSMV 1801): Vehicles 10 years old or older can be junked with this form instead of a title.

Step 4: Apply for a Car Title in Louisiana
If your vehicle is less than 10 years old and you don’t have a title, you’ll need to request a replacement or duplicate one, or transfer the title to the junker’s name before junking it.
1. Apply for a Replacement or Duplicate Title
- Use Form DPSMV 1799.
- Cost: $68.50 + $8 Office of Motor Vehicles handling fee (add up to $18 if using a Public Tag Agent)
- Options:
- By mail – up to 30 days.
- In person – at the Office of Motor Vehicles. 7-10 business days.
Next-day processing is available for duplicate titles for a $10 fee.
2. Transfer a Title (if the vehicle was never titled in your name)
- Use Form DPSMV 1697.
- Cost: $76.50 + taxes.
- Same processing times as above

Step 5: How to junk your car
Step 1: Check your car’s title status online → Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles
Step 2:
- If the car is less than 10 years old, you’ll need to apply for a duplicate or new title, or transfer the title to your name (Form 1799 or 1697).
- If the car is more than 10 years old, you don’t need a title to junk it – just use form 1801.
