Step 1: Check the title status

Looking to junk a car with no title in Georgia? Before you apply for a replacement or duplicate title, check your title status online via the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Step 2: Check requirements

Make sure you check title requirements before you apply for a replacement. In Georgia, the following will apply to you:

  • Cars less than 12 years old: A title is required to junk or sell the vehicle.
  • Cars 12 years old or older: A title is not required to junk or sell the vehicle.

You can use this guide to learn more about car title requirements in Georgia, what to do if you don’t have a title, or what to do if you have a newer model.

In Georgia, you’ll usually need a title to junk a vehicle, but there are some exceptions depending on the age of the car.

Step 3: Special Situations

Cancellation of Certificate of Title for Scrap/Derelict Vehicles (Form MV-1SP): Vehicles 12 years old or older and worth less than $850 ($1,700 for trailers) can be junked with this form instead of the title.

Note: You may be required to provide proof of transaction, such as a bill of sale, even if a title is not required. Check with your local DMV or equivalent authority.

Our team can handle the paperwork for you and help you get the best deal for your unwanted car. Contact us today for more information.

Step 4: Apply for a Car Title in Georgia

If your vehicle is less than 12 years old and you do not have a title, you’ll need to obtain a replacement or duplicate title or transfer the title before it can be junked.

1. Apply for a Replacement or Duplicate Title

  • Use Form MV-1 DOR
  • Cost: $18
    • In person – this form will need to be completed in person at the County Tag Office. Applications are processed on the same day.

2. Transfer Title (In Georgia)

If you were given a physical title when you bought the car, but the title was not transferred correctly to your name, you will need to contact the seller to get their signature on the title. The buyer and seller will then both need to complete the relevant fields on the back of the title to transfer ownership. You can see the full guide on the Georgia Department of Revenue website.

Note: this is only applicable to titles being transferred within Georgia.

You can then take the signed title to your local DMV or equivalent authority for processing.

3: Transfer Title From Another State or Country

If you’re transferring a title from another state or country, the process differs.
You’ll need to provide completed form MV-1, plus form T-22B Certificate of Inspection.
You must also supply Georgia liability insurance and an Emission Inspection Certificate, if applicable.
You’ll also need to pay:

  • $20 license plate fee
  • $18 title fee
  • Title Ad Valorem Tax
  • And any penalties due.

For more bespoke and in-depth guidance, contact the Georgia Department of Revenue.

4: Apply for a bonded title (if you can’t locate the seller)

If the title was never correctly transferred to your name and you no longer have contact with the seller, you can apply for a bonded vehicle title on the basis of a surety bond.

You can apply for this at the County Tag Office using the completed MV-1, completed form MV-46 – Certificate of Title Bond, form MV-46A – Certificate of Title Bond Affidavit, and form T-22B – Certificate of Inspection.

The cost of these bonds varies, but can be approximately 1.5% of the surety bond total.

Additional forms may be required.
