How to Junk Your Car With No Title in Ohio

Step 1 no title icon Step 1: Check the title brand

Don’t have a title for your Ohio junk car, but still need to junk it? We’re here to help.

Start by checking your vehicle’s title status via the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Online Service using the title number or VIN. This will disclose information such as brands and notations on vehicles titled in Ohio.

This will prevent you from unknowingly junking a vehicle with an active lien or a hidden salvage title.

Step 1 no title icon Step 2: Check requirements

In Ohio, you’ll need a title to junk a vehicle of any age.

Most no-title junk car buyers like Wheelsaway will still require you to apply for a new, replacement, or duplicate title to complete the process.

Skip the BMV stress as we walk you through the application process step-by-step. This guide covers paperwork requirements, timeframes, costs, and supplies all the resources you need to get started!

Step 1 no title icon Step 3: Apply for a Car Title in Ohio

No title? No worries. Applying for a duplicate title is simple. Here’s how:

1. Apply for a Replacement or Duplicate Title

Note: your signature must be notarized.

2. Transfer Title

Complete your details and the odometer reading in the “Assignment of Ownership” section on the back of your title. Your signature must also be notarized. You can then give the title to the buyer to complete the transfer process.

Note: this applies to paper titles being transferred to licensed buyers and brokers like Wheelsaway. If you’re transferring an electronic title to a new owner via a casual sale, you must complete Form BMV 3770.

Signing the back of the title

Don’t sign the back of your title until you’re sitting in front of the notary. A title signed beforehand won’t be accepted, which can delay the sale. When you’re ready, complete the Assignment of Ownership section with your printed name alongside your signature, plus the date and odometer reading. The notary will then complete their section to make the transfer valid.

Trying to junk an abandoned vehicle?

If the vehicle meets all of the following:

  • Left for 48 hours or longer on private property without permission, or on a public road or parking area
  • Three years old or older
  • Inoperable
  • Extensively damaged
  • Has a value of $1500 or less

It can be reported to and junked by local law enforcement, as outlined in Section 4513.63. Contact your county sheriff or local police department for more information.
