1. Apply for a Replacement or Duplicate Title

  • Use Form VR-018.
  • Cost: $40 (+ $19.43 for expedited processing)
  • Options:
    • In person – At any Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) kiosk. Can take between 5-10 business days.
    • Online – via myMVA. Expedited shipping is available for $19.43. Typically arrives within 3 business days.
    • Mail – To any Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) kiosk. Can take between 5-10 business days.

2. Transfer Title

In Maryland, you’ll need to transfer ownership of the vehicle to junk it. Ensure you have the original car title to do this, or apply for a duplicate using the process above.

You’ll need to sign the appropriate columns on the back of the title, including the sale price and mileage. You may also need to provide an odometer disclosure statement (VR-197), proof of insurance, a bill of sale (not required if the car is more than 7 years old), and a lien release if relevant.
