Getting ready to junk your car in Massachusetts? This FAQ explains the entire process, including what to do if you’re missing the keys or title.
You want to cash in on your car, but you’ve lost your title. Can you still scrap your car without one?
Before you get started, check its title status with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles using the VIN and/or Title Status. This will help you clarify some important info about your ride that you may not know, such as whether it has any outstanding liens or whether it has a salvage title.
If the vehicle isn’t registered in Massachusetts, you can check its title status using a provider registered with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).

Whether you need a title to scrap your car varies by state.
In Massachusetts, you need a title to junk a vehicle of any age.
If you’re trying to junk your car without a title, we’ll explain how to apply for a new or replacement title, how to transfer a title, and more.

There are a few cirumstances where you won’t need a title to junk your car. These are:
If the vehicle was manufactured before 1980, you may be able to junk it with just a bill of sale, an old registration and/or a valid ID. For more information, talk to your junkyard.
If your vehicle isn’t exempt, you’ll need to apply for a new or replacement title to junk your car. Here’s how:

Q: Do I always need a title to junk a car in Massachusetts?
A: You’ll usually need the title, unless your car was manufactured before 1980, or it has been totaled and is over 10 years old. If you don’t have the title, you can apply for a new one (Form TTLREG100_0923), or a duplicate (Form TTL 117_0822).
Q: Can I junk a financed car without a title?
A: No. The lienholder usually needs to agree for the car to be junked, and the proceeds used to pay off the outstanding loan. You’ll also need a valid title in your name to junk the car, unless it meets the exemptions (manufactured before 1980 or more than 10 years old).
Q: Do I need my registration to junk my car?
A: No. You can usually junk a car without the registration, as long as you have the title.
Q: Can I junk a car that’s not in my name?
A: No. You’ll need to transfer the title into your name and prove ownership before you can junk it.
Q: Will junkyards accept cars with no paperwork at all?
A: Sometimes, depending on the vehicle’s age. Talk to your junkyard for more information.
